Civil War Painting

Upon first reading this article, I was surprised to read that civil war painting or the Civil War in general was being compared to painting of volcanoes. At first, I did not know how they could possibly correspond. As I finished the article, I had a clearer understanding of what the author was talking about. A painting of a volcano will most likely include red, bubbling lava, which will spread everywhere. This lava can be compared to the massive amount of bloodshed from the Civil War that filled the creeks and the fields. The smoke that billows out of the top of the volcano and covers and chokes everything in sight, can be compared to the gun and cannon smoke that was so dense, soldiers had a hard time seeing each other. I think that many historical events can be depicted accurately in paintings and compared to other events. I don't really know if it is completely true that most Civil War painters paid little attention to the landscape.
